by Mary N. Stanley

Mary N. Stanley (1920–2005) began to write late in life. All but one of the poems in this collection were written after her seventy-eighth birthday. Essentially unschooled in the craft of poetry, except for a few workshop sessions, Stanley wrote as she could. The results may not attain to “high art,” but they do convey clearly the life of the poet.

Mary Stanley served in the U.S. Army, stationed in England during WWII and in Germany after the war ended. Despite her difficulties with the Veterans Administration, she remained a life-long American patriot.

Mary Stanley’s poems deal with childhood memories, her love of cats and other pets, the alienation and isolation of urban life, her frustration and despair at failing health, her love of country, and the shock of the terrorist attack on 9/11/2001. One senses throughout that this woman was not a quitter, never let go of hope.
